Three groups of fifth-graders from New York City public schools, drawn from Tribeca, Washington Heights, and Bensonhurst — embark on a ten-week ballroom dance program that culminates in a citywide competition. As the children learn the tango, merengue, rumba, foxtrot, and swing, the camera captures something far larger than dancing: the struggles, hopes, and blossoming confidence of kids from immigrant families and low-income neighborhoods, guided by devoted teachers. A warm and irresistible portrait of childhood on the edge of adolescence, and of what happens when young people are given the chance to aim for something.
